This week’s round up of money-saving apps can truly revolutionise your life. We’ve found apps to help you budget and become smarter about spending and saving money in your everyday world, making apps the best money saving companions around. Here are a few of our favourites.
We mentioned this app from Money Super Market back in our International Women’s Day blog; Gill in the team here recommended it as her top app for women (and men). The app lets you view all your bank accounts in one place with one login. It’s a read-only service which means it cannot be used to move money in or out of accounts but is great at letting you see what you’re spending your money on.
This app makes payments with friends simple and free; it’s great if you’re splitting a restaurant bill, buying group tickets to a show or the cinema, doing a communal grocery shop or sharing the cost of a friend’s birthday gift. You can use the app to send someone cash or request someone pay you. You just need to connect your bank card to the PayFriends account in order to pay out.
MasterCard is behind this app which allows you to find free cash machines; really handy if you’re in a new area. The app uses geolocation to find all the nearest cash points and displays them on a map.
Atom Bank is the UK’s first app based bank; it’s built exclusively for mobile and doesn’t have any high-street branches. The fixed saving accounts offer some of the best interest rates around, according to Money Super Market at 1.9% for 3 years. Customer support is available 24 hours a day with the option to call or Live Chat. Our experience of Live Chat at 10.30pm was really positive. Security to log into your app includes facial recognition which can be a bit dodgy but you can also use voice recognition, or a number code too.
Buy products, take a photo of your receipt and receive cash securely into your bank or PayPal account - it’s that easy. The app provides shoppers with a daily list of items they’re offering cashback on with different online and store supermarkets. It’s best to let your earnings build up as you’re charged a 5% fee when you make a payment request to withdraw money from your account.
The app is great at comparing prices of products head-to-head. Either search for a product in the search bar or scan the product’s barcode to find out how much it will cost from other retailers before you buy. Users share their product and shop reviews, and summaries of thousands of expert reviews are also available. A Which? featured Price Alert service also lets you know when your product has reached your desired price.
This is one of the best money-saving voucher apps with a mix of shopping, eating and travel discounts. With more than 50,000 vouchers for over 5000 brands and retailers, this is a brilliant app for shoppers looking for savings and bargains.
If you eat out regularly it could be worth subscribing to Tastecard and upload the app for loads of 50% off food offers or ‘2 for the price of 1’ deals. The scheme covers more than 6000 restaurants around the UK including chains like Pizza Express, Prezzo, Strada, La Tasca, Zizzi, Marco Pierre White. Thousands of independent restaurants are also included alongside a large selection of hotel restaurants such as Hilton, Mercure, Holiday Inn, and Ramada. Monthly membership is £4 or annual subscription is £29.99. You can search for local restaurants, view reviews and comments from the community, create a list of your favourite restaurants and even book a table with the app.
Check out last week’s blog on apps for holiday planning savings; in particular SKYSCANNER (Free | iOS and Android) for deals on flights, hotel and car hire, and TRIP ADVISOR (Free | iOS and Android) for restaurants, accommodation and day trips.
This app is designed to help you locate the free parking areas in your current location, so you never need to pay for parking again. It’s also a great money-saving app if you travel a lot to other cities and aren’t familiar with free parking areas there.
If paying for parking is necessary, the app allows drivers to find the closest parking to their destination, tells them how much it will cost and whether the space is available.... which means no more driving around looking for parking! You can use the pre-booking service which allows drivers to reserve and pay for parking online. There is detailed information on over 50 million parking spaces in 75 countries (including car parks, street parking and private driveways).
Trainline is one of the cheapest ways to find train tickets and save money when travelling, especially if you book in advance. The app highlights the cheapest prices for UK national rail bookings.
Meter Readings (Paid £1.99| iOS)
This app allows you to closely monitor your household gas, electricity and water usage, which in turn should help you save money. Once you start entering readings, your usage, costs and savings are calculated and displayed in easy to visualise graphs. The inbuilt torch function to help read meters kept in dark cupboards is a useful tool too!
There are so many apps out there with the sole purpose of helping you save – it’s just a matter of trying them out and working out which ones are best for you. Let technology do the hard work for you! Keep your bank cards safe too with our selection of phone wallets and backcases that also include useful card slots (see below!). We’ve got styles to suit everyone; real leather in our Leather Shell Case Collection, Vintage Collection, and Slimline Wallet Collection or if natural wood is more your thing, check out our Wilderness Collection.
PS. Know someone who would like this? We'd love you to share with a friend.
